Traditionally balance springs are made of metal. They are vulnerable to shocks, magnetic fields and even the pull of gravity, which can cause warping. The specialists from Breguet found the solution to this problem with the creation of a silicon balance spring. Silicon is totally impervious to magnetic fields. The manufacturing operations of a silicon balance spring yield a broad variety of shapes, facilitating the highly accurate adaptation of its shape to precisely calculated models. Silicon balance springs are lighter than metal ones and thus less prone to deformation caused by the pull of gravity. They are also less vulnerable to shocks and provide far superior resistance to corrosion.

The new Breguet timepiece is housed by a round case crafted from 950 platinum. The case measures 41 mm in diameter and features a sapphire case back. Rounded horns are welded to the case and the screw pins are securing the strap. The new watch is water resistant to 30 meters.

The dial of the new Breguet Tradition is crafted from silvered 18K gold. It is hand-engraved on a rose engine off-centred at 7 o’clock. The dial shows Roman numerals as well as a 60-second tourbillon placed at 1 o’clock. Open-tipped Breguet hands are made of polished steel.

The heart of the new Breguet watch is a hand-wound mechanical movement calibre 596 clad in an anthracite gray alloy of platinum-group metals. The movement is complicated with a tourbillon regulator. It provides power reserve for 50 hours. Torque regularity throughout the operation of the watch is provided by the fusee-and-chain transmission.

The new Breguet Tradition Fusee Tourbillon is a brilliant example of a classical complicated timepiece that can serve both as an elegant accessory and a precise time-measuring device.

Announced in July 2007, the sleek and professional Oceanus OCWM700TDA-1A is the latest addition to the Oceanus line of classically styled quartz watches with leading-edge technical features. This Oceanus (which I’ll call the 5 Motor Tide Graph) is similar to the OCW600TDA-1AV previously reviewed, however the 5 Motor Tide Graph seems a little more geared toward the worldwide business traveler; not only can it receive atomic time calibration signals in the US, but also in Japan, Germany, and England.

The feature of the Oceanus 5 Motor Tide Graph that I find most interesting is, well, the tide graph. At the top of the multi-function dial at the 3 o’clock position is a small tide chart. Moving from right to left, it indicates local tide height based on latitude and the intertidal interval. Since tides vary with local geography, you can calibrate the watch to match your local cycle.

What sort of globe-trotting person needs a tide graph? My personal theory is new managers who still surf, sail, or dive. I have a co-worker in exactly that role, and he really likes this Oceanus. Combined with the non-corroding titanium case and 100M water resistance, it can go from surfing to staff meeting and look great both places.

The 5 Motor Tide Graph adds a few new features to its predecessor, the OCW600TDA-1AV:

• Multi-band atomic radio reception.
• Tide graph.
• Retrograde day indicator.
• Optional ion-plated black version (the one reviewed here is the silver-cased version).

I really like the idea of removing LCDs from high-tech watches and dressing them up a bit, however there’s no getting around the fact that usability tends to suffer. In a digital watch, for instance, the display more or less tells you what mode you’re in, and since it changes accordingly, it keeps you well oriented. On an analog-only watch, however, it’s trickier. Some of the mode indications are simple (as when the tide graph is engaged), but some are more subtle and require a bit of experience to get used to. In other words, if you want to use all the features of this watch, expect to spend some time playing and learning. It’s not rocket science, but it’s probably a little more complex than the simple face might lead you to expect.

Aside from the learning curve, there’s quite a lot to like about this watch:

• The titanium case makes for a very light and comfortable watch that still feels well-made.
• Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
• Despite all the functions, the dial is still pretty readable.
• Wonderfully detailed blue and white sub-dial hands.
• 5-band radio reception.
• 100M (330 feet) of water resistance.
• World time with time zone swapping (easily swap your primary time zone with your secondary time zone, and vice versa).
• Subtle date at the 4:30 position (nicely unobtrusive, but there when you need it).
• Retrograde day indicator in addition to the date.
• The solar panel is actually a ring around the dial, in a complimentary shade of silicon-chip blue. Functional, and simultaneously a nice design accent.

The Oceanus 5 Motor Tide Graph is a good looking watch that does a nice job of hiding a ton of high-tech features. It’s zero-maintenance, perfectly accurate on several continents, comfortable, slim, and dressy enough to suit a wide variety of social situations. Best of all, it’ll tell you when it’s time to ditch your meetings and go surfing!

In addition to the other timepieces Luminox recently provided us, we also got a sneak preview at the unreleased 6402 'Blackout' seen here. Based on the previous F-117 Nighthawk 6402, the Blackout goes stealth with black-on-black dial, hands and matching PVD case and bracelet. The only color on the face is the tritium tubes and Luminox logo.

As you can see in this comparison picture, the Blackout is larger and blockier than the 2002. The blocky lines of the case, crenellated bezel and all-black color make this a watch that Darth Vader would wear. On the outside of his suit. It's big, bold, heavy and unapologetically macho. As you'd expect, black hour markers on a black dial aren't exactly easy to read, but you can still do so due to the light-colored vials in the hands; daytime visibility is therefore mediocre. Again, style is the point, so keep that in mind.

Check out the heavy serrations/crenellations on the bezel - no problem grabbing and rotating this one. As you'd expect, it's one-way, 60 clicks, with a tritium vial at 12 o'clock protected by a small crystal. Very functional, and also serves to protect the case and face as well. You can also see some nice finish and detailing on the bracelet center link.

Because this was a pre-release watch, we had to keep it in new condition and therefore didn't remove all of the plastic or size the bracelet. Annoying, but worth it to check out the newest design from Luminox.

On the wrist, it's heavy and quite fun to wear. At night, it lights up with an  interesting contrast to the daytime look. The prototype has red/green lume, but the production watches will have blue with a single orange highlight at twelve o'clock.

Because of the increased height and bezel, I'd expect it to be less shirtsleeve-friendly, so it's definitely not for the cautious suit wearer. More of a bold statement, and it'd rock with jeans or outdoor gear. I think that you'll know if this is the watch for you. It's not going to have much of a middle ground; either you'll love it or not.

List price will be $850.

Overall, it looks like a really nice watch. The reduced size, streamlined case and improved materials are something I look forward to reviewing. I do wonder why they priced it so high, though: The Ultimate Pathfinder has a similar feature list, and is only $400USD. It's not clear to me why this one is worth over twice as much.

The registrations for the 2010 Rolex Miami OCR closed on Friday, 8^th of January. The annual regatta which was established in 1990 by US SAILING has been a major attraction for the most elite sailors from around the world to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic classes. This year more than 640 sailors from 45 countries have registered for the regatta. These numbers have far surpassed last year’s entries and prove the popularity of the regatta with the most prominent Olympic and Paralympic medalists and World Champions participating in the event. The regatta promises the most elite international competition that the waters of Biscayne Bay have witnessed. The dates for the regatta have been affixed from 24 January to 30 January. The registered sailors would be sailing in the classes selected for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The results of the sailors in the US SAILING’s Rolex Miami OCR would be considered as part of the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings. 20 points would be awarded to the winner of the gold medal, while a silver medal would get sailors 19 points. The sailors would essentially be competing in the 2.4mR (open, able and disabled), 470-Men, 470-Women, 49er (men), Finn (men), Laser (men), Laser Radial (women), RS-X Men, RS-X Women, SKUD-18 (mixed, disabled), Sonar (open, disabled), Star (men), Elliott 6m (women) and the Women’s Match Racing class. The US SAILING’s 2010 Rolex Miami OCR regatta is not only essential as it is one of the most competitive sailing events in the world, but also as it is the last qualifying event for the 2010 US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics and is thus crucial for American sailors.

As the 2010 Rolex Miami OCR is the inaugural event for the sailing season of 2010, it also acts like a gauge for the rest of the year and the result of the winter training that the sailors have been through. This season is witness to around 166 registrants from the U.S., 80 from Canada, 49 from France, 41 from Great Britain, 28 from the Netherlands, 23 from Germany and 20 from Denmark. Nick Thompson too will be looking forward to defend his last year’s Laser World Cup title. Paige Railey too would be participating in this year’s regatta. Paige Railey was the winner of the silver medal in the Laser Radial at the 2009 Rolex Miami OCR and has also won gold medals in two other ISAF Sailing World Cup events in 2009. The US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics would also be looking forward to giving their best performance at the regatta as this is the only sailing world cup on their home turf and they would be looking forward to back up their Silver medal from Sail Melbourne.
